Backup PS3 Games – How I Did It

I’m happy to say that I’ve now found a really easy way  to backup PS3 games.

You’d know from my previous posts, that methods that are in widespread use when it comes to backing up both the XBox 360 and Wii platforms – the use of Mod Chips and/or burning copies of your games using a DVD-R Burner, PC-DVD Rom Drive and the appropriate backup software – aren’t really able to be used when it comes to doing PS3 backups – due to the fact that PS3 mod chips aren’t readily available and that you can’t burn copies of Blu-Ray discs using your standard CD/DVD Burner.

But even despite the all this – the technical and computing skills required to pull off either of these two approaches, really does put them beyond the reach of your average PS3 gamer. Added to that is the fact that if you break open your Playstation (to install a mod chip, for example) then you’re going to void your warranty – which is really something that you should aim to avoid.

What we were all really crying out for was an easy way to back up our PS3 games that anybody could do, that didn’t cost much and could also be used to backup game disks on other platforms if necessary. Game Copy Wizard doesn’t require any extra hardware, software or any kind of advanced computer skills.(I should point out here that I already had a Blu-Ray Burner – with which Game Copy Wizard worked fine. I found the software very easy to use. The interface is straightforward and there are detailed instructions which walk you through the whole backup process. Similar to using image copying software, the process was over in a matter of minutes. Following the program’s step-by-step instructions, I was able to copy and save the game ISO image to my hard drive, then transfer it to a blank Blu-Ray disc . They say on their website that it’ll take you 2-5 minutes to complete the process. It took me 7 minutes but I ain’t complaining about that!

What also imprssed me is that it comes with free updates so I know that I’ve got a tool that I can continue using well into the future.

How To Backup PS3 Games – Some Current Options

If you’re into gaming across a few of the more popular formats (PS3, Wii, XBox 360 etc) and you’ve done any sort of ressearch in this area: you will have noticed that backing up PS3 games is much less straightforward proposition than it is for either its Microsoft or Nintendo counterparts.

Installing mod chips and/or using a DVD-R Burner with ImgBurn and some appropriate backup software are two ways that you can go about backing up either Wii or XBox 360 games – but this is not so easy when it comes to PS3.

Let’s look at the situation as it stands in repect to doing backups up PS3:

PS3 Mod Chips?

Modding a PS3 can best be described as a work in progress. Whilst there are several outlets that offer mod chips for XBox 360 and Wii consoles there are only two that I could find that offer a mod-chip for PS3 consoles (and one of these is in the “coming soon” bracket)
If you don’t know what a mod chip (short for “modification chip”) is, it is basically an electronic device that once installed can be used to modify or disable built-in restrictions that you’ll find in video game consoles. The promise is that  once a mod chip has been installed a Playstation user will be able to play backups or copies of their PS3 games, as well as other apps.
There’s a European company called Infectus that has developed a mod chip with a re-programmable core which they sell for around $50 – and which they claim can be adpated to work across several platforms incuding PS3 – although they had none-in-stock when I last checked. There’s also an outfit called Belzar who are claiming that they’re working on developing a PS3 mod chip – but thus far all they’ve generated is rumours within some of your gaming forums.

But even if we assume that PS3 mod chips are readily available, there’s still the fact that their installation  requires a fair degree of technical expertise . The mod chip needs to be connected to the circuitry of a PS3 console’s motherboard – which involves soldering – so unless your skilled up in this area, this is not something that you’d want to be attempting yourself.

There’s also the issue that installing a mod chip involved you breaking the Playstation casing open and thus voiding your warranty.

Burning Blu-Ray Discs?

The PS3 console actually allows users to rip games and Blu-ray movies directly onto the hard drive, but then decoding these files is not an  easy undertaking for most gamers. The console isn’t designed to burn PS3 games, so you can copy and backup PS3 games, but executing the files usually still requires a genuine game disc.

The problem then comes down to the media. The advanced Blu-Ray discs that PS3 uses disqualifies the use of a lot of your standard CD/DVD Burning Programs.

What is really required in this instance is specialised game copying software.

Backups On PS3 – Why Do It?

Before we get around to the question of how to do our backups on PS3 we should probably first answer the question: why do backups on PS3 in the first place?

I’m older than most of the other gamers I know so for me money is not so big an issue; but I can remember that this certainly wasn’t the case when I was younger and nor is it the case with most young people I know these days,  who are heavily into gaming.
So let’s start with what we all know. When people talk about their favourite gaming platform these days Sony Playstation would come near the top of the pack. PS3 Games are some of the hottest sellers in the gaming market and their is  no sign of their popularity abating. But these games can be expensive. When you’re paying upwardsof $50 for a new game you certainly don’t want to be in a position where it becomes unusable and  you’re then forced to shell out another $50  just to replace it – particularly when you’re a teenager and don’t have ready access to that type of money.
In addition to this, PS3 game disks are fragile. They are simply  Blu-Ray or DVD disks which can scratch or break easily. Dropping a   disk onto a hard surface will quite often do enough damage so that it becomes unplayable (I know – I’ve done this!) Playing  games regularly can also result in minor damage to the surface of the discs  caused by the playing mechanism. Through repeated and frequent use (and don’t we all play PS3 a lot?!), these minor blemishes can accumulate and end up damaging the game disc permanently.
To reduce the risk of having to pay again should any of this happen – your best bet is to make a copy of the Ps3 games that you already have. And it should also be noted that you have a legal right to do this. There’s no issue with respect to making backup copies of  games that you’ve already bought. The problem of course lies in what is the best way to do this? It’s not possible to burn Ps3 games in the same way that you would a music CD as video game discs have “copyright protection” which precludes the copying of their content. Your Playstationwill simply not recognise the disk.
What is therefore needed is a way to bypass the copy protection encryption that is found on the majority of Ps3 game discs.

Backup PS3 – What’s The Best Way

My name is Tony Heywood. Welcome to my site which is dedicated to finding the best way to backup ps3 games.

I’ve been an enthusiastic member of the gaming community now for 17 years and one of the persistent problems that I’ve faced is finding an easy (and cheap!) way to back up my video game discs. I don’t just play Sony Playstation; I’m also heavily into XBox 360 and Nintendo Wii – and all formats suffer the same problem.
